Project of the Week – Steampunk Mixed-Media
October 5, 2022
For this week’s post, I decided to capture my “thought process” and some of the steps I go through when creating a piece. As you can see, it all begins with an idea. A fun tag and some elements (love the dragonflies) were my inspiration as well as a few pre-cut cogs.
The Background: Utilizing a black canvas panel, I added some elements including a fun bronze Liquitex paint.
Background Enhancement: Using old music, cardboard, vellum prints, and more, I began building my background. I used Liquitex Gel Medium to adhere my elements. It is a great binder and glue. It dries clear and cleans up well!
Assembly: Here we have a lot of trial and error. Pieces begin moving around the canvas looking for their proper place in the piece. I also have begun adding other elements such as the inked flower, red flowers, old bronzed chain, more cogs, and more inking.
Finished Product: After much moving and adjusting, here is the “almost” finished piece. I still need to seal a few items and add some paint splatters. The most challenging part – photographing my piece with cats around. Let’s just say the photobombs were a-plenty!
So there you have it. A piece from start to finish and some of my thoughts that go through my head. As you can see, I use a LOT of Sizzix pieces, cardstock, Tim Holtz ink, Liquitex and Golden paints/mediums/gesso, scrap ribbons and more! Let you creativity flow with a mixed-media piece.
